Men's Soccer Secures Crucial Point With 1-1 Draw at Cornell
9/30/2023 6:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer
ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown men's soccer earned a critical Ivy League point with a 1-1 draw at Cornell Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (2-4-2, 1-0-1 Ivy) move into a tie of second place in the Ivy League standings. The Big Red (3-2-2, 0-0-2 Ivy), who were receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll, are still looking for their first conference win.
The two top goal scorers in the Ivy League, Alex Harris of Cornell and Brown's Kojo Dadzie, each found the back of the net for their sixth goals of the season.
"Unbelievably proud of the team and the program today," said Chase Wileman, Friends of Brown Men's Soccer Head Coaching Chair. "This is a very difficult place to play against a good team and we earned a big point. The guys battled after going down a goal and we just kept fighting and stuck to the plan."
"We caught them in a pressing moment and Kojo showed a lot of poise to step up in that penalty and bury it. So proud, it was a huge point for us. Now we have to stay humble, keep working and get ready for Tuesday."
Cornell scored first in the 19th minute. Senior Matthew Goncalves blocked a kick from Brown's goalkeeper and passed it off to Harris who gave the Big Red a 1-0 advantage. That score would remain until the second half.
Brown's offense picked it up in the second. In the 54th minute, junior Kyle Gee stepped in front of a Cornell pass and was fouled in the penalty box. Dadzie then buried the penalty kick to even the score.
The Bears battled for the remainder of the match. Senior Scott Gustafson had a chance to give Brown the lead in the 78th minute, senior goalkeeper Hudson Blatteis made a huge save in the 85th minute and junior Harri Sprofera made a key sliding tackle in the 86th minute to keep the score even.
Brown hosts Stonehill College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. All tickets are only $2.
