Softball Takes Down Cornell 4-2 to Begin Weekend Series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (6-19, 3-7 Ivy) earned a win 4-2 win over Cornell (9-15, 3-4 Ivy) in the first game of a three-game series on Friday.
Julia Gubner led the Brown offense going 3-for-3 with two RBI as the Bears finished the game with nine hits. Alexis Guevara (5-7) picked up the win throwing a complete game, scattering five hits and striking out five.
The Bears struck first with in the first inning as Moe Kastens tripled to score Lily Berlinger. Berlinger had singled on a hot shot to first base and stole second to get into scoring position.
Brown got the offense going in the second inning adding three runs to its lead. The inning started with Dara English tripling down the right field line and Liv Kam reached base on a fielder's choice, putting runners at the corners. Kam stole second and both runners scored as Julia Gubner hit a line drive single to right center.
Brianna Rodriguez kept the inning going with a double off the third baseman's glove to put runners at second and third. After a groundout, Berlinger laid down a bunt to bring home Niki Kim on a squeeze play.
Cornell's first hit of the game came in the fourth inning as Guevara had kept the Big Red offense quiet for the first three innings. After a double and a sac fly, Cornell scored its first run. Guevara got out of the jam with a strikeout, leaving runners on second and third.
Brown's lead was cut in half in the fifth inning with another run by Cornell but Guevara once again got out of a jam, stranding two more runners with the Bears up 4-2.
Despite Brown's offense not putting up any more runs, the Bears kept the Big Red off the board for the final two innings to secure the win, breaking a six-game losing streak,

Brown will close out the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. for Brown's Pride Day. The Bears will also be giving away visors to fans in attendance.
