PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (8-19, 5-7 Ivy) earned a three-game sweep over Cornell (9-17, 3-6 Ivy) with two 3-2 wins on Saturda to close out the series with the Big Red.
Both Jodie Aguirre and Alexis Guevara threw complete game victories for the Bears, while Moe Kastens and Brianna Rodriguez each finished with three hits on the day. Dara English hit her first home run of the season in the game two win.
GAME 1: Brown 3, Cornell 2
Jodie Aguirre finished with eight strikeouts, throwing a complete game to give Brown the win in game one. The Bears finished with eight hits as both Moe Kastens and Brianna Rodriguez each had two hits.
For Aguirre, it was her second complete game in Ivy League play and her first complete game win in league play in her career.
After two quiet innings the Bears struck first in the bottom of the third. Brown began the inning with a double from Brianna Rodriguez off the left field line and Rodriguez scored on a double by Liv Kam. The Bears kept things going as Lily Berlinger ripped a single up the middle to bring home Kam. Berlinger moved to third on a ground out by Meghan Gormley and the Bears executed a perfect squeeze play on a bunt by Laurel Moody for the third run of the inning.
Cornell picked up its first run in the fourth on a solo home run to left center. The Big Red added a second run in the fifth but Aguirre again got out of a jam to keep the Bears ahead.
Brown would not be able to get any insurance runs but Aguirre wouldn't need any help finishing off the Big Red to give the Bears the one-run win.
GAME 2: Brown 3, Cornell 2
After Cornell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Brown responded in the next half inning. With one out, Jasmine Hsiao drew a walk and Dara English roped a two-run shot down the left field line for a two-run home run.
The Bears added to their lead in the third inning. Berlinger singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt. After a lineout, Gubner hit a hard grounder to third that got past Cornell's third baseman and scored Berlinger from second.
Cornell added a solo home run in the fourth and had runners on the corners but Guevara got out of the inning with the lead intact.
From the fifth inning on, Guevara allowed one baserunner as the Bears closed out the sweep over the Big Red.
