Yale Takes Doubleheader Sweep from Brown Baseball

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team rallied late to force extra innings before falling 8-7 in game one, and a big seventh inning in game two helped propel Yale to a 15-8 win and a doubleheader sweep of the Bears on Sunday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
Senior catcher Jacob Burley had two hits in each game and scored a pair of runs in the doubleheader. Senior outfielder Derian Morphew went 4-for-9 with three runs scored overall, including three hits in game two. Freshman Logan Meusy went 3-for-7 in the two games, including a triple and a home run as part of his first career start in game two. Jared Johnson had a pair of doubles and a triple on the day.
Freshman DJ Dillehay had one hit in each game, both of which left the yard for his first two career home runs, the first of which tied game one in the bottom of the ninth. The knocks helped him extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Junior pitcher Paxton Meyers made his first appearance of the season in relief in game one and kept the Bulldogs at bay, allowing just one hit over 4.1 shutout innings.
GAME 1
Brown put up a crooked number in the first, scoring three times after two outs to take an early 4-0 lead. Morphew led off with a single down the left field line, and later came home on a ground ball by Petersen. After a sequence that included a key walk by Ryan Marra, Nathan Brasher drove a two-strike single up the middle to plate Marra. Up next, Johnson drove a double to deep right center field to score two and stake the Bears to the four-run cushion.
Yale answered back with five runs on five hits in the second inning, putting the first six runners on base before a pair of sac flys and a caught-stealing ended the inning. Yale added one more run on two hits in the third and added a solo homer with two out in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead.
After a rocky first inning, Reid Easterly settled in on the mound for Yale, retiring 14 batters in a row until Marra drew a hit-by-pitch in the sixth inning. Overall, he retired 20 of 21 batters before surrendering a single to Mika Petersen and double to Burley with one out in the eighth before being lifted. Marra got Brown back on the board with a sac fly to plate Petersen and cut it to 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth. Burley tagged a two-out single to plate Reece Rappoli and make it 7-6 heading to the ninth.
Dillehay led off the ninth for Brown and jumped on a 1-2 pitch and launched his first career homer to left center field to tie the game and force extra innings. In the 10th, Yale took the lead via three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Rappoli reached on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the bottom of the 10th for Brown, but was stranded on second as Yale locked down the win.
GAME 2
Yale put up four runs in the first inning on three consecutive walks and two sac flys.
The Bears answered right back in the bottom of the first as Morphew led off with a walk, then Dillehay followed by crushing a towering home run to straightaway center field to give Brown the early 2-0 lead. After Burley singled, he came in to score on a ground ball by Johnson to get the Bears within one.
A one-out walk followed by an RBI double extended the Yale lead to 5-3 in the top of the second, but the Bears answered back in the bottom of the inning when Meusy led off the frame by lining a triple to the wall in right center, then came home on a single by Morphew.
Yale blew the game open with 10 runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, starting with a solo homer leading off the sixth, followed by seven runs (five earned) on five hits in the seventh, and two more in the eighth.
Brown did not go quietly as Muesy crushed his first career home run to left field in the seventh, a three-run shot that made it 13-7 at the time. Morphew tripled leading off the eighth inning and came in on a double by Burley.
Brown will return to action at home this Tuesday, April 4 when they host Holy Cross in a non-league matchup starting at 3:30 p.m.
