CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown softball had chances but fell to Harvard 3-1 in the opening game of the series with the Crimson on Friday.
Brown (5-17, 2-5 Ivy) finished the game with eight hits with Lily Berlinger, Moe Kastens and Meghan Gormley all collecting two. Laurel Moody and Vanessa Alexander each had one hit. The Bears left nine runners on base in the game.
Harvard (11-9, 5-2 Ivy) scored all three runs in the bottom of the first inning, all coming with two outs as Brown starter Alexis Guevara gave up three singles and a walk.
Guevara settled after the first inning, shutting out the Crimson for the next five innings, giving the Bears a chance to climb back into the game. Guevara finished the game with three strikeouts.
Brown had runners in the second and third innings, including a Berlinger double but Harvard kept the Bears off the board until the fourth.
Kastens singled with one out in the fourth and after a groundout, Gormley delivered on a double to left to bring home the Bears' run.
Brown's best chance to get back into the game came in the fifth and Alexander led off with a single. After a flyout, Berlinger singled and Moody reached on an error to load the bases and force a pitching change. Brown would strikeout and popup to second to end the inning, leaving the bases loaded.
The Bears managed to get runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not get them around.
