Marra’s Late Homer Sends Baseball Past Stonehill, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A big home run in the seventh inning from senior Ryan Marra helped lift the Brown baseball team to a 4-3 non-league win over Stonehill on Tuesday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
Brown put at least one runner on base in all eight innings as four players – Derian Morphew, Mika Petersen, Ryan Marra and DJ Dillehay all had two hits apiece. Marra reached base three times and drove in three of the Bears' four runs, all with two outs. Conor Cooke added walk and RBI double. Brown also cut down two runners at the plate on defense.
The Bears sent three freshmen to the mound in the win, with Dylan Reid going the first five innings and allowed one earned run on six hits. Christian Keel earned his first career win by allowing one run on three hits over 3.0 innings. Peter Dubie picked up his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
After allowing an unearned run in the first, Brown evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Petersen scored on a single by Marra.
Brown took the lead in the fourth when Dillehay grounded a one-out single up the middle, then came around to score from first on a double by Cooke to put Brown in front 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, left fielder Gunner Boree threw the would-be tying runner out at the plate for the second out of the inning to keep it a one run game, but Stonehill used a bloop two-out hit down the right field line to tie the score 2-2.
The Skyhawks threatened for more in the top of the sixth, putting men at second and third with nobody out. After a groundout failed to score a runner, Dillehay made a diving stop at shortstop and threw home, which was picked by Cooke on the short hop and tagged the runner for the second out to keep the game tied. A popout to shortstop helped the Bears escape the inning without allowing a run.
In the seventh inning, Morphew led off with a double and stole third base. With two outs in the inning, Marra stepped up and once again delivered a big blow, crushing a 2-2 pitch over the right center field wall for a big two-run homer to give the Bears a 4-2 lead.
Stonehill came right back on the second pitch in the eighth inning with a solo homer by Ryan Flaherty to pull within one. The Skyhawks put two men on with one out in the ninth, but Dubie picked up a strikeout and a ground ball to end the threat and lock down the win.
Brown will return to action this weekend with a three-game Ivy League series against Yale at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium, currently scheduled to begin on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Stay tuned to BrownBears.com and @BrownU_Baseball on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for schedule/weather updates.
