CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 18th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (4-2, 1-0 ACC) used a second quarter run to take a 19-6 home win over the Brown Bears (3-2, 0-0 Ivy League) Saturday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
"Really disappointing loss today and hats off to Coach Breschi and North Carolina," said Rothman Head Coaching Chair for Men's Lacrosse Mike Daly. "They beat us in every phase. That game is on me – our team was not ready to play today and again, that's really disappointing. We will regroup and be ready to open League play next week."
Quintin O'Connell scored the afternoon's first goal with 10:07 remaining in the first quarter after a scoreless back-and-forth start to the game.
Ryan Behrens recorded his first goal of the afternoon in transition just 38 seconds after O'Connell's marker to even the score. However, UNC's Andrew Tyeryar scored his first of the game 10 seconds later to give UNC a lead they would not relinquish.
Lance Tillman and Logan McGovern, the latter a graduate transfer from Bryant, made it 4-1 Tar Heels with consecutive goals halfway through the first.
Jack Kelly pushed his goal streak to three games 2:10 remaining before Tillman added his second of the game with seven seconds remaining in the first.
The Tar Heels extended the lead with five straight goals in the second quarter to take a 10-2 halftime lead. Harry Wellford tallied two of the Tar Heel goals.
Behrens and Aidan McLane cut UNC's lead to six in the opening minutes of the third quarter. But the Tar Heels responded with four goals to close out the frame with a pair from James Matan.
Behrens completed the hat trick with 8:30 remaining in the fourth for his third of the game and first career multi-point effort.
Connor Theriault finished the game with 13 saves in 52:50 of play and made stops on multiple point-blank shots from the Tar Heels. Freshman Harry Laferriere recorded two saves in the final 7:10 of play. UNC's Collin Krieg recorded nine saves in 53:04 to pick up the win.
