3/18/2023 5:02:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Matteo Corsi recorded his first career hat trick with 2:02 remaining in regulation to give the Bears their first lead of the game at 15-14. But the Harvard Crimson (3-2, 1-0 Ivy League) tied the game in the final seconds of regulation and scored the overtime winner to take a 16-15 win over the Brown Bears (3-3, 0-1 Ivy League) in the conference opener Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Aidan McLane led the Bears with seven goals with Corsi added the hat trick and an assist for four points. Connor Theriault recorded 16 saves for the Bears.
"I'm proud of our team, they showed a lot of fight and a lot of the young guys really stepped up into key roles," said head coach Mike Daly. "It's a lacrosse game that went to overtime and they made the play they needed to make. We needed to find those plays. I'm proud of our assistant coaches for having this team ready to play, I'm proud of our players for playing, but in a one-goal game that's on the head coach to find that play."
Harvard jumped to an early lead with Hayden Cheek and Nick Loring finding the back of the net with 14:25 and 11:18 remaining in the opening quarter, respectively.
After McLane and Harvard's Sam King traded goals, the Bears struck with 2:43 and 1:16 remaining in the quarter to even the score at 3-3. McLane scored Brown's second goal on an EMO and Marcus Wertheim recorded his second of the season.
Harvard opened the second quarter with a three-goal run to push the lead to 6-3 with 11:34 remaining in the first half. Two of the goals came on the potent Crimson man-up offense.
Brown responded as McLane capped the first half hat trick with Trevor Glavin and PJ Behan chipping in goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 5:41 remaining in the half.
The Crimson had another three-goal run before the end of the half to take a 9-6 lead into the break. King had two of the final three goals for a first half hat trick of his own.
Brown and Harvard continued to trade goals in the third quarter with the Crimson leading by one or two goals throughout.
Trailing 12-10 entering the fourth, Brown evened the score quickly with goals from McLane and Wells Bligh with 13:57 and 11:39 remaining, respectively. The Bears and Crimson then traded goals to get to a 14-14 tie with 2:58 remaining.
Brown flipped the scoring trend as Corsi scored with 2:02 remaining in regulation to give the Bears a 15-14 lead.
Unable to extend the lead, Brown went back on defense in the final seconds and following a Crimson timeout, Teddy Malone tied the game with 13 seconds remaining to force overtime.
In the extra period, Brown had two chances on offense to find the game-winner but were unable to get one past Harvard goalie Christian Barnard (7 saves).
The Crimson gained the offensive zone with 45 seconds remaining and called timeout and with 13 ticks remaining in the first overtime, Malone found King at GLE for the game-winner.

STEVENSON-PINCINCE PIER & PLAQUES
Former players and friends of Cliff Stevenson and his counterpart Phil Pincince began an initiative to create a brick pier in their honor.
All existing named fields in the Ericson Athletic Complex display these unique piers, which include plaques recognizing the individuals associated with the facility, while providing relevant history.
After a successful fundraising effort, a classic brick pier has been constructed inside the main entry gate to the facility. Included are three slate plaques: one details the history of the naming of the field (pictured), while the other two tell the personal stories of these two iconic coaches.
Today's game offered the first opportunity for spectators to view this new addition to Brown Athletics history.
