Men's Hockey Blanked by #13 Cornell in Conference Play
2/24/2023 9:58:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 13th-ranked Cornell Big Red (17-9-2, 14-6-1 ECAC) tallied three third period goals to take a 5-0 conference win over the Brown Bears (9-17-2, 5-14-2 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"We got beat in every facet of the game of ice hockey tonight," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It was discouraging to see; we finally had our full lineup back and the guys have to understand how hard they have to play. Cornell is an elite-level team; they play heavy, hard, intense hockey and we did not. So, what happens is you get beat 5-0.
"We have to turn around and find a way to get some positive momentum heading into playoffs. Again, we finally have our full team back but we have to play better than that."
Cornell scored the night's first goal 6:33 into the first as Jack O'Leary finished a feed from Kyle Penney in the slot to beat Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (42 saves), who made his first start after missing the last six games.
Cornell goaltender Ian Shane (14 saves) stole a goal from Gavin Puskar halfway through the second after quick puck movement from Ryan Bottrill to Jordan Tonelli to Puskar to set up the grade 'A' scoring chance.
Just over two minutes later, the Big Red doubled the lead as Ben Berard tallied his ninth goal of the season.
Sullivan Mack tallied consecutive goals at 10:09 and 12:38 of the third period to push Cornell's lead to 4-0.
Zack Tupker tallied the final goal of the night with 1:17 remaining with assists from O'Leary and Travis Mitchell.
Brown closes out the 2022-23 regular season tomorrow night against the Colgate Raiders (14-15-4, 11-8-2 ECAC). Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+. Click here to purchase tickets.
