ATLANTA, Ga. – The Brown baseball team was unable to overcome a slow start in its 2023 season opener at Georgia State on Friday afternoon, as the Panthers scored nine runs over the first two innings en route to a rain-shortened 11-3 victory in six innings.

Senior Derian Morphew went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Freshman Peter Dubie turned in a strong effort on the mound in his collegiate debut, striking out seven over 3.2 innings of relief.
The Panthers took advantage of some early Brown miscues to take a 2-0 lead after one inning. They then broke out the bats and scored seven runs on six hits and two Brown errors in the second, highlighted by a two-out grand slam to take a 9-0 lead after two innings. Only two of Georgia State's runs through the first two frames were earned.
After a one hour, 12 minute rain delay in the middle of the third, Brown broke through for three runs, all after two outs, in the top of the fifth. Morphew tagged a two-out single to plate Nathan Brasher with the first run. Reece Rappoli and Ryan Marra each worked the count full and drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to force home Gunner Boree and Morphew with two more runs to cut the deficit to 9-3.
Dubie took the mound after the delay and fired 3.0 scoreless innings before a walk and two-run homer in the sixth pushed the Panther lead to 11-3. Shortly after, another rain delay forced the game to be called with two outs in the sixth inning.
"We were a different team before the rain delay, and came out in the bottom of the third inning playing loose and confident," head coach Grant Achilles said. "Our at-bats were competitive, and we collectively got off the mat. Unfortunately, we ran out of time. Peter Dubie didn't pitch like it was his college debut and we're very proud of him."
The same two teams are scheduled to square off in a doubleheader (both nine innings) on Saturday afternoon, starting at 1 p.m. No livestream will be available.
