
Baseball Drops Saturday Matchup at Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Brown baseball team dropped the second game of their season-opening series at Georgia State on Saturday afternoon, falling 10-4 in game one of a scheduled doubleheader. In game two, the Bears fell behind 4-0 after four innings before the game was suspended by lightning. As a result, the two teams will now pick up the suspended game from where if left off on Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m., followed by their regularly scheduled series finale.
The Bears fell behind early in game one, but rallied to pull within one run on two occasions, but a five-run seventh inning helped the Panthers pull away late for the victory. Mika Petersen, Reece Rappoli and Jacob Burley all had two hits apiece in game one.
GAME ONE
The Panthers struck early with two runs in each of the first two innings on seven combined hits. Trailing by four, Brown got on the board in the fourth when Rappoli singled leading off, and later scored on an RBI single by Burley.
The Bears clawed back within one with a pair of runs in the fifth. Gunner Boree walked leading off and Petersen dropped down a bunt single and stole second to put two in scoring position for Rappoi, who drove a two-run single up the middle to pull Brown within 4-3.
Georgia State grabbed an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, but Brown came right back with a run in the sixth to make it a one-run game once again. Jared Johnson reached on an error after dropping down a bunt and later came home on a two-out knock up the middle by Petersen to make it a 5-4 game.
Georgia State answered back by putting up five runs against the Brown bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning, using three hits including a big three-run homer to pull away and make it a 10-4 game.
Sophomore Santhosh Gottam went 6.0 innings on the mound for Brown in his first start of the season, allowing just one earned run on two hits over his final 4.0 innings of work, ending his day with a laser to first on a bunt attempt to end the sixth inning.
Carter Rasmussen made his collegiate debut in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
GAME TWO
After a scoreless opening frame, GSU used a pair of walks and a single to go up 1-0 in the second inning. The Panthers tacked on two more run via a homer and sac fly in the third and added another run in the fourth on a throwing error to hold a 4-0 lead through four innings before the stoppage.
The two teams will finish off their four-game series tomorrow (Sunday) starting at 11 a.m. Saturday's suspended game will be competed from where it was stopped at the start of the top of the fifth inning. Sunday's regularly scheduled game will follow.
