Bedell Ties School Floor Record as Brown takes Down Springfield on Senior Day
2/12/2023 4:38:00 PM | Women's Gymnastics
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown sophomore Julia Bedell tied the school record on floor to help lead the Bears past Springfield 194.325-189.525 on Senior and Alumnae Day on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Brown set season-highs on both vault and floor and remains unbeaten at home this season (5-0) across three meets.
Bedell's floor score of 9.925 ties the Brown program record with three other gymnasts – Caroline Morant (2017), Danielle Hoffman (2014) and U.S. Olympian Alicia Sacramone (2007).
Senior Abby Contello took home first place on bars, was runner-up on vault, and tied for third on beam. Bedell won both of her events (vault and floor), and Lauren Kramer set two career-highs on vault and floor.
After the meet, Brown honored its five-member senior class of 2023 - Contello, Lauren Lazaro, Jasmine Lee, Ella Poley, and Carolanne Van Zandt.
"It was awesome watching Julia compete on floor," head coach Brittany Harris said. "She has been a rock in the gym and was really solid with her routine. We talked a few weeks ago about potentially adding the full-in to her routine for the first pass and how we would strategically prep to do that so it's safe and for her to feel good about it. She did what I expected her to do and it was nice for her to get rewarded with that score. I'm excited to see what her future holds."
Brown started off the meet with a strong season-high showing on vault at 48.850, led by Bedell at 9.825. Abby Contello was next at 9.800, followed by Umi El Mammann with a career-high of 9.775, and a pair of 9.725 scores from Lauren Kramer (career-high) and Angela Xing, who tied her season-high.
Brown followed that up with a 48.000 on bars, sweeping the top four spots overall. Contello led the way for Brown, taking gold with a score of 9.775. Lauren McKeown and Ella Poley tied for second overall with new career-highs of 9.750, followed by Asta-Sollilja Farrell in fourth at 9.725. Maya Davis also scored a 9.700 on exhibition.
The Bears posted their second-highest score of the season on beam at 48.525, trailing only last weekend's school record score. Xing tied her season-high at 9.825 to lead Brown in first place. Liza Marcus scored 9.725 to take second place, followed by Maya Davis and Abby Contello at 9.700, tying for third.
Rounding out the meet on floor, Brown finished the day off with another season-high of 48.950, sweeping the top three spots in the event and setting three-career-high and one season high. Bedell led the way in first place with her school-record tying mark of 9.925, followed by Davis' season-high of 9.850 in second and Kramer's career-high of 9.825 in third. El Mammann tied her season-high at 9.625.
"Something that I've been preaching to them is you fight for everything," Harris said. "It doesn't matter if something is off or you have a little mistake, you keep fighting because that may be the score we need to win. We can only control our controllable and that is our gymnastics. At the end of the day, celebrate everything and have fun. I love that even though some things may be a little off, that next person steps and is a great teammate and has your back."
Brown will return to action on President's Day, next Monday, February 20 at 1 p.m. with a quad meet at LIU with Bridgeport and Towson.
