Men's Hockey Skates to 2-2 Tie Against LIU, Wins Shootout
12/1/2023 10:26:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-6-1, 2-5-0 ECAC) skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against the LIU. Sharks (5-10-1, Independent) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The Bears won the shootout, 2-1, in five rounds.
"We're still learning. We didn't have a great first but we definitely got better in the second and third," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "So, the guys found a way to be a better, more complete team as the game wore on. That being said, we have to find a way to start with a little more fire in our belly.
"There are some positives, you learn about your team and who works well together. You learn about the guys that deserve to stay in and maybe the guys that deserve to come in. Again, not pleased with the start but I'm pleased with the response as the game went on. We continue to learn."
The Sharks struck first on a 5-on-3 advantage 8:44 into the first period as Josh Zary re-directed a Grayson Constable shot past Lawton Zacher (26 saves). Cade Mason picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Mike Cataldo tallied his first career goal 11:15 into the second period to even the score at 1-1. Matthew Brille carried the puck into the offensive zone and moved the puck to his classmate for the assist and his first collegiate point.
Max Scott broke the deadlock on the power play 4:04 into the third, collecting a loose puck in net and beating Brandon Perrone (23 saves) for his fourth goal of the season. Jackson Munro picked up his third assist of the season on the goal.
Zary tied the game with 2:28 remaining in the third, finishing a feed from Austin Brimmer in the low slot to force overtime.
Both teams finished the 3-on-3 overtime period with two shots on goal.
"We were better in 3-on-3 tonight than we have been in the past, we had some chances," Whittet added.
Brown captured the shootout in five rounds as Scott and Ryan Bottrill found the back of the net with Zacher making four saves.
