Men's Hockey Takes 3-2 Conference Win Over Colgate
11/3/2023 10:25:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ryan St. Louis tallied the game-winner with 4:47 remaining in the third period to lift the Brown Bears (2-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC) to a 3-2 conference win over the Colgate Raiders (2-4-1, 0-1-0 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown picks up three ECAC points with the regulation victory.
"That was a very good win against the defending ECAC champs coming off a bye week," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They took it to us in the first period, I thought we were very slow in our decision-making process – and some of that's to be expected – that was only our third game and that's sometimes the crux of the Ivy League start; you're playing teams that are much more up to game speed. That being said, I thought we came on and had a really good second and third period. We found a way to turn it and make sure we were intelligent with how we played.
"I thought we got better as the game went on. A huge win in league, you have to get points at home, and sets us up for a battle against what I think might be the best team in the country tomorrow in Cornell."
Junior Tony Andreozzi opened the scoring at 11:56 of the first period with a great move to beat Colgate goaltender Carter Gylander (25 saves). Jordan Tonelli flipped the puck to the neutral zone to spring Andreozzi on the semi-breakaway.
Alex DiPaolo evened the game at 18:21 of the first with his first goal of the season. DiPaolo one-timed a cross-crease feed from Brett Chorske to beat Brown netminder Lawton Zacher (18 saves).
Early in the second period, Zacher exited the game due to injury and was replaced by sophomore Tyler Shea (16 saves).
"Credit to Tyler Shea, that's a tough situation to come into," Whittet added. "Zacher got injured in the first and couldn't go and I thought Shea did a really good job for his first win."
Jackson Munro put the Bears ahead late in the second period with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle off quick passes from Ethan Mistry and Ryan Bottrill. Munro's goal came less than a minute after Brown's first power play of the game expired.
Colgate's Ross Mitten tallied his third goal of the season with 22 seconds remaining in the second to send the game to the third tied at 2-2.
Max Scott forced a neutral zone turnover and found Bottrill entering the Colgate zone with speed late in the third period. Bottrill moved the puck to St. Louis in the slot where the sophomore deked to his backhand for the game-winner.
Brown held the Colgate offense at bay in the final minutes to preserve the one-goal lead and give Shea his first collegiate win.
