PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey fell 1-0 at home to Providence in the Mayor's Cup on Saturday afternoon in non-league action.
Â
The Bears (5-7-1) put 21 shots on goal, while the Friars (5-9-0) finished with 27 shots on net. Senior Goaltender Kaley Doyle came away with 26 saves, while sophomore Jade Iginla led all players with six shots on goal.
Â
"Highly disappointing outcome and performance by the team today," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "We know that we're better than that and we felt like we were very much within our right to win the mayor's cup for the first time since the 2014-15 season. There are things we need to look at to get back to our identity. Just not a great performance from top-to-bottom."
Â
Things were evenly matched through the first 12 minutes of the first. Brown had eight shots on goal, while Providence had 10. The Friars closed the period with five more shots, but Doyle saved each one as the game was scoreless after the first 20 minutes.
Â
Providence netted the game winner in the second period. Freshman Audrey Knapp scored from seniors Brooke Becker and Maddy Coene.
Â
Brown had an opportunity with a five-minute major early in the third period, but couldn't capitalize on the power play. Senior Cassidy Piersiak had the best look with a shot off the pipe at the 9:26 mark.
Â
The Bears then pulled their goalie in the final minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
Â
There was a total of eight penalties with four on each team.
Â
Brown continues its season at home against Yale on Saturday at 3 p.m.
