Men's Hockey Drops Non-Conference Matchup at Holy Cross
11/24/2023 9:45:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross Crusaders (7-6-2, 3-6-2 AHA) jumped to a 3-0 first period lead and held the Brown Bears (3-6-0, 2-5-0 ECAC) at bay, taking a 6-3 non-conference win Friday night at the Hart Center.
"The problems stem from the first period," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We were not good from the start; I don't know what our thought process was. We work all week to play in a game and we get off the bus and play like that in the first period against a good hockey team. I don't know why we thought it was going to be easy.
"When the light switch is off, it's really hard to turn back on and the light switch was off for the majority of our team from the start of the game. It's unacceptable, I'll take the blame as I told them. I wore the uniform proudly and played in a lot of big games and have coached teams that have played in big games. It's not acceptable to not show up for a game and it won't happen again."
The Crusaders jumped to a 1-0 lead halfway through the opening frame as Matt DeBoer picked up a Brown giveaway and beat Lawton Zacher (11 saves) high second goal of the season.
Jack Ricketts and John Gelatt tallied goals less than two minutes apart late in the first to push the Crusader advantage to 3-0.
Ricketts added his second of the game 3:55 into the second, finishing a feed from Matt Guerra past Brown goaltender Tyler Shea (20 saves).
Jordan Tonelli cut into the Crusader lead halfway through the second. The captain lasered a shot to beat Jason Grande (26 saves) immediately after a Holy Cross penalty expired. Jackson Munro and Ethan Mistry picked up the assists on the even-strength goal.
A power play goal for Jack Stockfish, the brother of former Brown women's hockey player Madie Stockfish '23, at 10:35 of the second made it 5-1 Crusaders.
Max Scott cut into the lead 4:22 into the third period during a 4-on-4 stretch. Ryan St. Louis drove to the net where Grande made the initial save and Scott found the rebound for his third of the season.
St. Louis tallied his ninth goal of the season less than a minute later during 4-on-4 play to cut the home team lead to two. Scott assisted on the goal.
Tyler Ghirardosi found the empty net with just over a minute remaining to push the final score to 6-3.
