Men's Hockey Drops Overtime Conference Game at Princeton
11/11/2023 10:14:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown Bears (2-4-0, 1-4-0 ECAC) took a 2-0 lead in the second period against the Princeton Tigers (2-1-1, 2-1-1 ECAC), but the Tigers fought back to take a 3-2 overtime win over the Bears Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
"I thought we had a great response; the results aren't what we wanted but we definitely took steps as a team," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we thoroughly outplayed them for large stretches in that game. What we have to do is find a way to extend a lead. We're up 2-0 and they get a lucky goal where the guy steps out oif the penalty box and gets a breakaway. We just need to find a way to extend.
"We had plenty of chances to make that 3-0, 3-1, 4-0. But it's a step, it's not the result we want – we play to win the hockey game – but I was encouraged by some of the signs I saw."
Brown and Princeton were scoreless through 20 minutes with chances at either end of the ice. Tyler Shea (35 saves) finished the frame with 10 saves.
Alex Pineau broke the deadlock 2:01 into the second period with a power play goal following the night's first penalty against Princeton's Kai Daniells. Pineau collected a pass from Matt Sutton and wired a shot past goaltender Conor Callaghan (29 saves) for his second goal of the season. Jordan Tonelli also assisted on the power play goal.
Max Scott doubled the lead during a stretch of 4-on-4 play at 8:04 of the second. The freshman deked around a Tiger defenseman and snapped a shot past Callaghan for his second goal of the season. Jackson Munro set up the goal with the assist and Brett Bliss picked up the secondary helper.
After picking up a goalie interference minor, Princeton's Ian Murphy picked up the puck leaving the box for a breakaway and cut into the Brown lead with his second goal of the season at 16:22 of the middle frame.
With Callaghan pulled for the extra attacker, Princeton tied the game with 1:05 remaining in regulation as Joe Berg found the back of the net.
Tyler Rubin tallied the overtime winner halfway through the extra period to give the Tigers the win.
