Goals by Seelenfreund, Raphino Lift Women's Soccer to Victory Over Penn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team took down Penn 2-1 Saturday evening at Stevenson-Pincince field thanks to goals from Ava Seelenfreund and Brittany Raphino.
Seelenfreund and Raphino, while both scoring once, also each assisted on the other's goals.
With the win, the Bears move to 8-1-2 on the year and a perfect 4-0-0 in Ivy League play. It pushes their undefeated streak in Ivy action, that dates back to 2018, to 25 games with a mark of 23-0-2. The Quakers fall to 5-6-2 on the season and 0-3-1 in Ivy play.
"The team came out with a lot of fire and energy today," head coach Kia McNeill said. "We talked about the fact that we didn't want to 'grow into the game,' we wanted to start on the front foot which I think we were able to do. I think we got away from what was working for us, and that is what allowed Penn to get into the game.
"Towards the end of the game you could see some fatigue set in from the fact that we have had three intense games in eight days, but I'm happy we were able to do enough to close out another win on our home field. The team is going to take a much deserved couple days off to rest and rejuvenate for next week's match against Columbia."
The Bears got on the board first in the 30th minute off the foot of Seelenfreund. Sheyenne Allen, who assisted on both goals on the evening, sent a high, left-footed cross into the box that Raphino headed down. Seelenfreund beat her defender to it and sent a hard shot, as she was falling down, across the face of the goal and into the inner left-side netting. It was her first goal of the season and 24th of her career, tying her for ninth in program history.
Penn answered back in the 40th minute when Mallory Lucas found Megan Lusher in the middle of the 18-yard box. Lusher's shot found the bottom left corner of the net to tie the game at one, and that's how things would stay headed into halftime.
It took Brown exactly six minutes into the second half to find the game-winner. This time, Allen sent a ball in off a corner that deflected off Seelenfreund and to the feet of Raphino. She wasted no time and drove the ball into the back of the net from just a few feet out.
Raphino's goal and assist on the night gave her 93 career points, tying the Randolph, Mass. native for second all-time in program history. Her next point will give her sole possession of second place. Her six goals over the last three games are Raphino's most ever in a three-game span.
Penn would attempt to find their second equalizer, putting three of their six shots on goal during the final 31 minutes of action, but the Brown defense stood strong.
On the night, the Bears outshot the Quakers 17-9, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. In addition, Brown earned 10 corners to Penn's two.
Clare Gagne made a season-high five saves in goal to pick up her sixth win of the season.
Brown will head to Columbia next week to take on the Lions on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
