AMHERST, Mass. – The 15th-ranked UMass Minutemen (9-7-3, 3-6-1 HEA) scored twice in the second period and added an empty-net goal in the third to take a 3-0 home win over the Brown Bears (4-10-2, 1-7-2 ECAC) Tuesday night at the Mullins Center.
"I knew we'd have a little bit of rust with the time off since early December, but overall, we had plenty of chances and I thought their goalie played outstanding," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought [Pavicich] saw a lot of pucks in the first two periods, I don't think we established the correct net-front presence, which is something we work on. I thought it was better in the third period."
Brown and UMass skated to a scoreless first period with both teams finishing the frame with seven shots on goal. UMass came up empty on two power play chances while the Bears were 0-for-1 in the period.
Matt Sutton had Brown's best chance of the game early in the second, jumping a UMass pass and coming down on goaltender Luke Pavicich (33 saves) on a semi-breakaway. Sutton's shot was turned aside by Pavicich to keep the game scoreless.
UMass struck for the night's first goal at 8:23 of the second period on the Minutemen's third power play of the game. Tyson Dyck re-directed a centering pass from Cal Kiefiuk in the low slot to beat Mathieu Caron (22 saves).
Dyck added his second of the night at 10:53 of the frame to make it 2-0 Minutemen, deflecting a quick shot from Cole O'Hara off the faceoff.
The Bears ratcheted up the pressure in the third looking to cut into the two-goal UMass lead. Pavicich stood tall and finished the period with 14 saves.
Caron was pulled for the extra attacker with 3:20 remaining in the third, however, Scott Morrow found the empty net with 29 seconds remaining to make it 3-0.
