PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team got a goal from each of its three starting forwards to claim a convincing 3-0 win over Hofstra Sunday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears improve to 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 2000.
In both 2011 and 2019, Brown started the season 3-0-1, but not since 2000 had the Bears come away victorious in each of their first four games.
"It was a great team performance that we had today," head coach Kia McNeill said. "We changed our formation a bit so I think it was great that the team was receptive to the change and executed the game plan really well.
"Hofstra's a great team so to put together a convincing 3-0 win is just a sign of how good our team is. The scary part is we can continue to grow and get better from here."
In a new starting formation that featured Miya Grant-Clavijo up top alongside Brittany Raphino and Ava Seelenfreund, the Bears were able to put pressure on the Pride early and often.
After a couple of close misses, Brown broke through in the 15th minute. Seelenfreund worked her way through four defenders and into the 18-yard box. She left a ball off to the right for Grant-Clavijo who only needed a single touch to beat the goalie and put the Bears up 1-0.
Just three minutes later, it was Seelenfreund's turn to find the back of the net. She again used swift footwork to free herself up just outside the 18 and took a left-footed shot that all the Hofstra keeper could do was watch it sail into the top left corner of the net.
"I think just going into the game with confidence and running at them," Seelenfreund said in reference to how she was able to put together such a dominant performance. "Knowing that I have a full team of support behind me has been great. Kia has really been instilling confidence in us and giving us the green light."
For the first time this season, the Bears were able to convert in the second half to add to their lead. In the 60th minute, Raphino, from the far-right side of the box, curled a shot around a defender and lofted it into the inner left side netting to make it a three-goal game.
From there, Brown was able to buckle down, sit on its lead, and get out of the game with its third shutout of the season.
The Bears' defense only allowed a single shot on goal that Lucinda Anderson cleared off the line during the 32nd minute of action. Aside from that, Brown only allowed one other shot all game long to outshoot the Pride 16-2.
Brown outearned Hofstra in corners as well, 5-1.
"I think this was a great confidence booster," McNeill said. "Especially going into Ohio State on Thursday. We're just excited right now and are going to enjoy this win."
The Bears are back in action this Thursday, Sept. 8 when they welcome Big Ten opponent Ohio State to Stevenson-Pincince Field.
