Men's Crew Wraps Up Home Opener Against Fifth-Ranked Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The sixth-ranked Brown Bears welcomed the fifth-ranked Harvard Crimson to Marston Boathouse Saturday afternoon in the 56th iteration and renewal of the Stein Cup on the Seekonk River. Harvard retained the Stein Cup with a 4.3-second victory in the Varsity 8 race and also took wins in the 3V8, 4V8, and 5V8 races. The Bears claimed a 10.9-second win in the Second Varsity 8 race.
The race was originally scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., but was delayed 70 minutes to allow for the south winds to shift slightly. Despite the delay, conditions were treacherous for the crews with an extremely strong headwind throughout the day.
"It was really rough water, heavy wind, and tough conditions and I think across the board our team brought really good energy, Harvard's a strong team," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "It was great to see the Second Varsity win their race and most of the races came down to which team handled the conditions better, which is, I think an interesting and exciting part of our sport."
The Fourth Varsity 8 began the competition with a 2:40 p.m. start and they were followed by the Varsity 8 (3 p.m.), Second Varsity 8 (3:20 p.m.), Third Varsity 8 (3:40 p.m.) and the Fifth Varsity 8 (4 p.m.).
In the Varsity 8 race, Harvard pulled to the early lead over Brown in the first 500 meters, stretching the lead to nearly a boat-length. However, Brown battled back into the race and closed the gap as the crews passed the Narragansett Boat Club, but the Crimson held on for the victory and retained the Stein Cup.
"Harvard handled the conditions a little bit better, they were taking long, powerful strokes into the wind," Cooke commented on the Varsity 8 race. "But I thought our guys really fought back well. I was really pleased to see the stubbornness in their race and the energy of the team overall."
The Bears and Crimson began the first leg of the 2V8 race neck-and-neck, but Brown pulled ahead in the middle third of the race to build a six-seat lead before extending its lead in the latter half of the race to post a time of 6:42.7 for the convincing win over Harvard (6:53.6).
The 3V8 race was similar to the 2V8 race but with opposite results. The Crimson held a slight lead in the first half of the race before stretching the advantage in the latter half to post a time of 6:41.7.
Harvard's 4V8 crew jumped to an early lead to begin the afternoon of racing and extended the gap throughout the 2,000-meter Seekonk course, ultimately posting a time of 7:23.2, comfortably ahead of the Bears (7:44.5).
The final race of the afternoon, the 5V8, was perhaps the most exciting of the day. The Crimson held the early lead and extended to nearly a boat-length by the mid-point of the course. The Bears closed the gap in the final 500 meters, but simply ran out of room as the Crimson squeaked out the 2.4 -second win with a time of 7:02.4.
Brown returns to action Saturday (Apr. 16) in Boston, Massachusetts to race against Northeastern for the Dreissigacker Cup. Next Saturday's race marks the 56th between the Bears and Huskies dating back to 1965.
