ITAHCA, N.Y. – A gem from Lauren Innerst led Brown to a 3-0 win over Cornell as the Bears split a doubleheader against the Big Red on Saturday (April 30).
GAME 1: BROWN 3, CORNELL 0
Lauren Innerst threw a complete game shutout and Brianna Rodriguez delivered a two-run single as Brown took game one over Cornell 3-0.
Innerst picked up her sixth win of the season, allowing just three hits and striking out six batters.
Both teams had runners on early but the biggest threat of the game early on came in the bottom of the second for Cornell. After a strikeout, a single and two walks loaded the bases. Innerst struck out the next batter and got a pop up to end in the inning.
Each team left a runner on in the third before Brown finally broke thorugh in the fourth. Vanessa Alexander singled and Laurel Moody walked with one out. After a fielder's choice loaded the bases, Rodriguez brought home Alexander and Moody with a line drive to left center to put Brown up 2-0.
After cruising through the next two innings, Innerst helped her cause at the plate. With two outs and Kat Clum on third, Innerst hit a ground rule double that bounced over the wall in left center to score Clum and make the lead 3-0.
Cornell threatened in the seventh earning a leadoff walk and an infield single. In the next at bat, a hard ground ball to third was picked up by Katie O'Leary, who tagged third and threw across the diamond for the double play. Alexander then snagged a line drive with a leaping catch to end the game.
GAME 2: CORNELL 4, BROWN 1
The Bears had the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning but fell to Cornell 4-1 in the second game of the day. Brown finished the game with six hits but left five runners on base in the loss.
Cornell scored a run in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of an error and plating the first run on a fielder's choice later in the inning. From there, Brown starter Erin Elgas retired nine of the next ten batters to try to keep the Bears in the game.
Brown got on the scoreboard in the fourth after Nicole Kim singled to right and moved to second on a sac bunt. Kim scored as Laurel Moody singled up the middle to tie the game.
Cornell broke open the game in the fifth with a solo shot on the first pitch of the inning. A single on the next pitch and a triple two pitches later made the score 3-1. After a walk, the Big Red took a 4-1 lead on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Down to their final three outs, the Bears got a one-out single from Rodriguez and Lauren Innerst doubled down the left field line putting runners at second and third, but a lineout and a strikeout ended the game.
