ITAHCA, N.Y. – Brown softball's seniors closed out their careers in a big way with a 5-2 win over Cornell in eight innings on Sunday (May 1).
Lauren Innerst picked up the win in the circle with a complete game performance. Katie O'Leary, Kat Clum, Grace Ladd and Madeline Charles all had clutch hits for the Bears in the victory.
Neither offense could get anything going through the first five innings as Brown was held hitless and Cornell only managed one hit.
In the sixth, Brown picked up its first hit of the game as O'Leary doubled to the wall in left center. Nicole Kim laid down a sac bunt and a wild throw by the pitcher to first allowed O'Leary to score. After a stolen base, Vanessa Alexander doubled to left center to bring home Kim and make the game 2-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Cornell got a runner on with two outs but Clum ended the inning with a fantastic diving catch in foul territory.
Brown loaded the bases in the seventh but couldn't bring any insurance runs across. Three outs away from the win, Innerst walked the first batter of the inning and allowed a two-run home run to tie the game. After allowing a double, Innerst stranded the winning run at second to send the game to extras.
After two outs in the top of the eighth, Clum doubled down the left field line to keep the game going. On the next pitch, Ladd doubled to center field to put Brown up 3-2. On a 3-1 count in the next at bat, Charles homered on a deep shot to left field to increase the lead to 5-2.
The bottom of the eighth started with back-to-back groundouts to O'Leary who tossed over to senior Elayna Tsiouplis at first. Innerst got a flyout to center to end the game and close out the season with a win.
