PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball earned a 1-0 win over Rhode Island after a walk-off shot by Laurel Moody as the Bears split a doubleheader with the Rams on Wednesday (April 27). Brown fell in eight innings in the first game of the day.
Moody and Vanessa Alexander each finished with two hits on the day. Senior Lauren Innerst earned the complete-game shutout win the second game, striking out five batters.
GAME 1: RHODE ISLAND 6, BROWN 5 – 8 INNINGS
Brown dropped a tough 6-5 game in eight innings to start the day. The Bears finished with eight hits, two coming from Alexander but finished one hit shy of keeping the game going in the final frame.
Tied 4-4 after seven innings of play, the eighth inning started under international tiebreak rules with a runner at second. A leadoff single brought home the go-ahead run. After a lineout, another single made the score 6-4 in favor of the Rams.
In the bottom of the inning, Grace Ladd singled to move Erin Elgas to third and a throwing error by URI's shortstop brought home Elgas. Leah Carey reached as Ladd was thrown out at third. A groundout by Nicole Kim put the tying run at third and the winning run at second but a groundout by Alexander ended the game.
Brown began the scoring as Elayna Tsiouplis singled home Carey who started the inning with a walk.
After Rhode Island scored in the second, Brown answered in the bottom of the inning, Kat Clum doubled to right center and Moody walked. Two outs later, Julia Gubner walked to load the bases and an error on Carey's grounder to short scored Clum.
Brown allowed two runs after an error in the top of the third but bounced back in the fourth. With two outs, Moe Kastens singled to left and Gubner drew another walk. Carey reached on another throwing error that brought home Kastens. Kim beat out an infield single as Gubner came across to put Brown up 4-3.
With two runners on and one out, Rhode Island scored a run with a single to left but the go ahead run was thrown out at the plate to keep the game tied.
Brown had a chance to win in the seventh as the Bears got two runners on with no outs but back-to-back ground outs ended the inning and sent the game to extras.
GAME 2: BROWN 1, RHODE ISLAND 0
The game began with both teams getting runners into scoring position but no one was able to come up with a clutch hit.
Throughout the game, neither team really posed much of a threat as Innerst and Rhode Island's starter Noelle Sterner kept the offenses off balance.
Brown was able to get a runner to second in the third and fifth but each time, the offense sputtered.
In the top of the sixth, Rhode Island got a leadoff single and back-to-back groundouts moved the runner to third. On the first pitch of the next at bat, Innerst got a pop up right back to her to end the threat.
A two-out walk in the top of the seventh and a single, moved the go-ahead runner to third for the Rams, but Innerst had the answer again, getting a fly ball to Clum in left.
In the top of the seventh, head coach Kate Refsnyder looked to Moody to kick start the offense and on the fifth pitch Moody saw, the freshman catcher hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season to send the Bears home with the win.
