PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team took down Cornell 12-11 on Senior Day to stay alive in the hunt for the Ivy League Tournament. The Bears can now guarantee themselves a postseason berth with a victory next week at Harvard.
"It's an awesome feeling getting the win on Senior Day," head coach Keely McDonald said. "We worked hard all week to prepare, to take care of the little things, and to be able to come out and execute today was great."
Mia Mascone and Maggie Fowler each had five points for the Bears. Mascone, Brown's leading goal-scorer on the season, played a different role today with four of her five points coming on assists. Fowler scored three times and assisted twice.
Sophia DeRosa had her first four-goal performance of the season and Claire Jeschke continued her point streak with three goals and one assist. Jackie Mason also scored once for Brown.
The Bears never trailed in the game thanks in part to their strong start that saw DeRosa and Fowler combine for the first three goals of the contest. Cornell responded with two of its own, but Jeschke and Fowler got the final two of the first to lead 5-2 after one.
The Big Red again cut the Brown lead to one at 5-4, but the Bears would go on to score four of the next five to build a 9-5 advantage three minutes into the third quarter.
Cornell worked its way back to eventually tie the game at 10 with 13:10 remaining, but one more from Jeschke and another from Mascone built a late, three-goal lead the Big Red could not come back from.
Erin Tucker made seven saves in goal, while Erin Schafer caused a game-high three turnovers and recorded four draw controls. Jeschke also had four draws.
The Bears will play a final nonconference game this Tuesday at UMass Lowell, before turning their attention to the all-important Ivy League finale at Harvard. Brown takes on the Crimson next Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. with a spot in the Ivy League Tournament on the line.
