PROVIDENCE R.I. – Brown softball celebrated its senior class on Sunday (April) but the Bears fell in a heartbreaker, losing to Harvard 4-3 in eight innings.
Four of Brown's seven hits came from seniors, with the biggest being a Madeline Charles solo home run in the second inning. Elayna Tsiouplis finished the game with two hits and Lauren innerst added a hit. Sophomore Vanessa Alexander also finished the game with two hits.
Innerst threw five innings in her final start at the Brown Softball Field, going five innings, allowing just two runs and striking out two batters.
Brown got on the board first in the second inning as Charles took the first pitch that she saw over the left field wall to give Brown the 1-0 lead.
After Innerst escaped a jam in the third, Brown added to its lead. Leah Carey singled and moved to second on a throwing error. In the next at bat, Nicole Kim laid down a bunt and the throw to first was wide of the covering second baseman and rolled all the way to the right field wall. Carey scored and Kim motored around to touch home and put the Bears up 3-1.
Harvard scored two runs in the fifth after three-straight singles, a sac fly and a ground out, but Innerst got out of the inning with the lead still intact.
Two-out singles in the bottom of the inning by Alexander and Tsiouplis had the Bears threatening but Kat Clum's hard ground ball was gathered by Harvard's second baseman to end the inning.
Jodie Aguirre entered the game for Brown in the sixth Harvard struck, earning a walk, following it with a sac bunt and singling home the tying run. A wild pitch moved the go ahead run to get to third but Aguirre got a groundout and strikeout to end the inning.
Harvard put two runners on but the Bears again were able to keep the Crimson off the board as the game headed to the bottom half of the seventh.
Carey walked with one out and Alexander singled to move Carey to second but another hard ground ball to second ended Brown's chance to walk it off as the game went to extras.
On a 2-0 count to leadoff the eighth, Harvard senior Morgan Melito hit a solo home run to put the Crimson on top.
Brown would go down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.
