Guevara strikes out career-high 11 as Brown takes down Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown freshman pitcher Alexis Guevara fired a career-high 11 strikeouts and Dara English had a pinch-hit home run as Brown beat Yale 4-2. The win was part of a split of the doubleheader against the Bulldogs on Saturday (April 2).

The first game of the series was a 4-3 win by Yale in eight innings.

GAME 1: YALE 4, BROWN 3 – 8 INNINGS
Brown dropped the first game of the three-game series with Yale, falling in extra innings. Erin Elgas was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in 6.1 innings pitched. Elgas scattered two hits and struck out two batters.

Yale scored two runs in the bottom of the first and held the Bears off the board until the fourth inning. In the first at bat of the inning, Katie O'Leary hit a rocket line drive that cleared the center field wall to put cut the lead in half.

The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the inning, picking up a run after an error in right field by the Bears.

In the top of the sixth, Brown began the inning with a walk by O'Leary. Elayna Tsiouplis singled to left and an error by Yale allowed both runners to move up. The Bears got on the board with a perfectly run squeeze play by Kat Clum to bring home a run. Two batters later, a single by Vanessa Alexander brought home Tsiouplis to tie the game.

Brown had two runners reach in the seventh but a strikeout and caught stealing ended Brown's threat.

The Bears got a runner on in the eighth but were not able to do anything with two infield popups. Yale quickly ended the game in the bottom of the inning with a walkoff home run by the leadoff batter.

GAME 2: BROWN 4, YALE 2
The Bears got a huge performance in the circle from Guevara, who tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts and kept Yale at bay for the whole game. Guevara allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter in the complete game win.

Guevara's lone mistake of the game came in the first inning as Yale's second batter of the game hit a solo home run to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.

Brown's offense started the game cold but came alive in the fifth. A one out walk by Moe Kastens was followed by Kastens moving to second on a wild pitch. An error by Yale and a single by Leah Carey loaded the bases. O'Leary then stepped to the plate and delivered with a single to tie the game 1-1.

In the sixth, Clum started the inning with a single and a double by Guevara to the wall in right center scored Clum. In the next at bat, Dara English pinch-hit and crushed the ball over the left field wall to make the score 4-1 Bears.

A triple, followed by a double brought in a run for Yale in the sixth, but Guevara shut down the Bulldogs with a pop out.

In the seventh, Guevara picked up strikeouts 10 and 11 to give Brown the win.
