PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A tough first inning put Brown softball in a bind as the Bears fell to Providence 6-1 in the Bears' home opener.
Laurel Moody hit her third home run of the season with a solo blast in the second but the Bears finished the game with just four hits from four different players.
The game started with Providence taking advantage of two errors by Brown to score six runs, including a bases-clearing double with two outs. Jodie Aguirre came into the game with two outs and got out of the inning with a ground out.
After giving up the six runs in the first, Aguirre and Erin Elgas shut down the offense for Providence, not allowing a run for the next six innings. Aguirre and Elgas each allowed three runs but gave Brown chances to get back into the game.
Moody stepped to the plate to leadoff the second inning and got the Bears on the board with her home run to right center field that bounced off the top of the wall.
The Bears got another runner on base in the third as Dara English doubled to the wall in right center with one out. English got to third on a groundout but was left 60 feet away.
Kat Clum reached third in the fourth, reaching base on an error by the right fielder and a single by Meghan Gormley but a strikeout ended Brown's threat.
A double play in the sixth ended Brown's last threat after Alexis Guevara singled to leadoff the inning.
