Brown Rallies Late to Take Game Two at Dartmouth
3/26/2022 5:13:00β―PM | Baseball
HANOVER, N.H. β A big four-run eighth inning for the Brown baseball team helped the Bears come from behind to defeat Dartmouth in game two on Saturday afternoon and earn a doubleheader split to open Ivy League play. After the Big Green rallied late to take game one 5-3, Brown rebounded for a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
Β
Junior Tobey McDonough allowed just two runs on four hits and one walk over 7.0 innings of work in game two to earn the win. Nathan Brasher and Derian Morphew had two hits apiece in each game, with Brasher totaling three RBIs in the two games. Ryan Marra had three hits in game one as part of a four-hit afternoon.
"Tobey got off to a bit of a slower start than usual but he got stronger as the game went on, said head coach Grant Achiles. "He was able to really compete and gave us arguably his strongest start of the year. We're proud of him and how him, (Seppings) and (Meyers) really closed the door today."
Charles Crawford delivered the big blow in the eighth for Brown, pinch hitting and driving one to the right field fence that plated the go-ahead runs.
Β
"Pinch hitting is one of the toughest things to do," Achilles said. "Charles stepped in and was ready. He was on time and hammered the baseball. It was a tough call with the error, but we got the runs which is the important part."

GAME 1
Brown started the game with three straight hits and four singles overall in the inning as Brasher and Jackson Hipp collected RBI knocks to help Brown go up 2-0 right out of the gate.
Β
Dartmouth came right back, taking advantage of two Brown errors to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first.
Β
Brasher came through again in the second, scoring Ray Sass with a single up the middle to give Brown the lead back at 3-2.
Β
Dartmouth tied the game on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning, then jumped in front for the first time in the seventh after an infield single and two-run homer, which proved to be the game-winning hit.
Β
Dartmouth pitching struck out 13 batters in the game, including 10 from the starter Nathan Skinner. After getting seven hits through the first two innings, Brown mustered only three baserunners over the final seven innings, all on singles.
Β
Brown starter Bobby Olsen threw a season-high 7.0 innings, allowing five runs, three earned while striking out five with no walks.
Β
GAME 2
Brown put men on second and third with nobody out following consecutive hits to start the game, but was unable to score.
Β
Dartmouth picked up two runs in the second inning to go up 2-0 after a leadoff triple, RBI double, and later a double steal of second and home.
Β
Brown didn't threaten again until the sixth inning when a pair of one out singles and a two-out walk loaded the bases, but Dartmouth starter Trystan Sarcone got a big strikeout to escape the jam.
Β
The Bears were able to break out in the eighth, plating four runs on two hits to jump in front. Morphew led off the eighth with a double, and came in on an RBI single by Brasher.
Β
Jacob Burley and Sass then grinded out back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout for the second out, Crawford stepped up as a pinch hitter and jumped on the first pitch, lining one deep to right and off the glove of the leaping right fielder to clear the bases with all three runs on a three-base error to put Brown in front 4-2.
Β
Jack Seppings came on in relief and tossed a scoreless eighth inning, and Paxton Meyers stranded the tying run in scoring position to earn his first career save in the ninth.
Β
The Bears will go for the series win on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game series. First pitch in Hanover is set for noon on ESPN+.
