PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's crew team opens the spring slate with a trip to Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey to race against a familiar foe, the Boston University Terriers, and a new opponent, the Navy Midshipmen, on Sunday, March 27.
Sunday's races are set to begin at 9 a.m. with the fifth varsity and continue every 20 minutes until the first varsity boats race at 10:20 a.m.
"We've raced so few times in the last three years that it's going to be a great opportunity to test ourselves against other opponents over 2,000 meters," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "We've had great leadership and we feel like all the student-athletes are playing the role they've been asked to play really well and that's created a really good environment for the coaches and athletes to get better."
After a successful fall season and spring training, the Bears return to competition following the canceled 2020 spring season and a shortened 2021 spring slate.
Against the Terriers, Brown's 1V has won three of the last four races, including the two most recent meetings in 2018 and 2019. In the 2018 race, the Bears swept the Terriers in all four races and in 2019, Brown's top-three boats beat out BU's contingent.
"We race BU every year and it's always exciting to see how we compare at the start of the season and how each team progresses and improves throughout the season leading into the Eastern Sprints and IRA," said senior captain Henry Hollingsworth.
Brown and Navy square off in the regular season for the first time on Sunday, a rare occurrence in Brown Crew's storied history.
"We're so excited, our team is as strong as it's ever been since I've been here," said senior captain Gus Rodriguez. "You can really feel the energy in the room and you can feel it on the water too. We're extremely excited to race on Sunday."
Brown has finished ahead of Navy in the Ten Eyck standings at the last 10 IRA Championships dating back to 2011. Last season's Championship was the closest the two programs have been, with Brown edging Navy by 10 points to finish a spot ahead of the Midshipmen in fifth.
"Navy is a new opponent for us, we haven't raced them before the Championships to my knowledge, and we're really excited to add them to the schedule," Cooke added.
Looking ahead, Brown competes every Saturday in April with five races, including two at home on the Seekonk River. There are five cups on the line this spring – the Albert Cup against Yale (Apr. 2), the Stein Cup against Harvard (Apr. 9), the Dreissigacker Cup against Northeastern (Apr. 16), the Atalanta Cup against Dartmouth (Apr. 23), and the Content Cup against Princeton (Apr. 30).
