PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown men's crew team opened the season on Lake Carnegie against the Navy Midshipmen and the Boston University Terriers on Sunday morning.
The Bears took first place in the first, second, and third varsity eight races and added second place finishes in the fourth and fifth varsity eight races.
"Every individual on the team contributed to the success of the crews today," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "It was a good first step and a strong team performance. Still, the crews have a long way to go until they are racing at a Championship standard. It's March."
The competition began at 9 a.m. with the second varsity eight race and continued with the first varsity eight race at 9:20 a.m. The Bears, Midshipmen, and Terriers closed the competition with the third, fourth, and fifth varsity eight races at 9:40 a.m. 10 a.m., and 10:20 a.m., respectively.
A crossing headwind was prevalent throughout the races but dissipated by the fifth varsity eight race on the 2,000-meter course.
In the first varsity eight race, Brown crossed the line with a time of 5:52.47 for a comfortable five-second victory over the Terriers (5:57.70) and Mids (5:59.60).
The 2V8 Bears posted a time of 5:59.45 to edge out Boston U. (6:03.68) and Navy (6:05.44).
The third Brown boat gave the Bears their third straight win in the morning after a time of 6:09.60 to cruise past the Midshipmen (6:14.90) and Terriers (6:18.86).
Brown's 4V8 took second place, finishing less than four seconds after Boston U. (6:27.96) to clock a time of 6:31.19. Navy took third with a time of 6:41.01.
The final race of the morning saw the Bears finish with a time of 6:23.33, behind the Midshipmen fifth boat (6:17.25).
Brown hits the water next Saturday (Apr. 2) with a race against the Yale Bulldogs on Lake Housatonic in Derby, Connecticut for the Albert Cup.
