Men's Hockey Drops 4-1 Decision at #2 Quinnipiac Tuesday
2/8/2022 10:15:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMDEN, Conn. – The second-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats (24-2-3, 13-1-1 ECAC) scored two goals in the first and second periods to take a 4-1 ECAC conference win over the Brown Bears (5-16-1, 5-10-1 ECAC) Tuesday night at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
"Quinnipiac is an excellent hockey team and there's a reason they're number two in the country," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They have 13 seniors or graduate students on their team with thousands of games of experience; and they're a very, very hard team to beat in their building. I thought that we played hard and intense for the majority of the game, we just got behind a team that set the NCAA record with 13 shutouts, they're very good defensively. It's hard to be down 2-0 after one and try to come back; we tried, but credit to them. They have a lot of experience and free agents in college hockey in terms of grad students."
The Bobcats celebrated what was thought to be the night's first goal 6:23 into the opening period as redshirt junior Guus van Nes attempted a wraparound shot on Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (33 saves). However, a video review confirmed the puck never crossed the goal line, and play resumed with no score.
After the overturned goal, senior Wyatt Bongiovanni scored on Quinnipiac's first power play chance of the game 9:51 into the first period and 15 seconds later, Bobcat junior and Vermont transfer Joey Cipollone doubled Quinnipiac's lead.
Senior Ethan de Jong scored at 6:45 of the second and senior Michael Lombardi tallied Quinnipiac's fourth goal at 13:26 of the period, both finding loose pucks after the initial shot was stopped by Caron.
Justin Jallen scored his team-leading seventh of the season 14:18 into the second to cut into Quinnipiac's lead. The senior picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and fought through a pair of Bobcats before wiring a shot from the left circle through the legs of Quinnipiac senior Zach Metsa to beat goaltender Yaniv Perets (17 saves).
The third period ended scoreless with chances at both ends of the ice. Quinnipiac finished the frame with an 11-7 edge in shots on goal.
