Men's Hockey Skates to 1-1 Tie with St. Lawrence
2/5/2022 10:30:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (5-15-1) skated to their first tie of the season Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium against the St. Lawrence Saints (7-13-6, 5-7-4 ECAC), but the Saints prevailed in the shootout for the extra ECAC league point in the standings.
"I thought it was a good game and we came out with a great first period, one of the best we've had in some time. They had a little bit of pushback with a good second period and we weren't as good then the rest of the game was fairly even," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We have to find a way to score on the power play, we were 0-for-5 tonight and our power play hasn't been very good all year. It has to be something that is a weapon if we want to score enough to allow us to be more successful."
After controlling play for much of the first period, Jake Harris scored the night's first goal at 19:49 of the frame. Junior Luke Krys picked up a St. Lawrence dump below Brown's goal line and flipped the puck through the neutral zone to Harris on the St. Lawrence blue line. Harris collected the puck and went five-hole to beat St. Lawrence goaltender Emil Zetterquist (24 saves).
The Saints tied the game 7:52 into the second period on the rush as Jordan Steinmetz finished a pass from Reilly Moran before crashing into Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (25 saves). A video review confirmed the puck crossed the goal line before Steinmetz made contact with Caron.
A back-and-forth third period ended scoreless. The Bears had a pair of power play chances in the frame, including a man-advantage late in the period, where Luke Krys hit the post with a shot from the point with 1:33 to play in regulation.
James Crossman had the best chance for either team in overtime early in the five-minute extra frame. The junior defenseman broke up a St. Lawrence neutral zone play and skated down the right boards on a breakaway. Crossman cut to the slot and wired a shot towards Zetterquist's blocker, but the Swedish goalie made the save.
For the first time this season, Brown went to a three-player shootout to determine the extra league point. Harris began the shootout and nearly scored moving to his left, but Zetterquist made the stop.
St. Lawrence's Kaden Pickering was next in the shootout, and he beat Caron with a high glove-side shot. Brown then sent Tristan Crozier and Justin Jallen in the shootout, but neither could beat Zetterquist, giving the Saints the extra league point.
GAME NOTES
On Friday (Feb. 11), Brown travels north to take on the Dartmouth Big Green (3-15-3, 2-11-2 ECAC) to close out the Ivy slate.
