MIAMI – Brown softball dropped both games on Saturday at the FIU Softball Invitational, losing in tough fashion to Stony Brook. Jaiden Ditimus shined in her first start of the season.
GAME 1: STONY BROOK 4, BROWN 3
The Bears suffered heartbreak in the first game of the day as Stony Brook won on a three-run walk-off home run with one out in the seventh inning.
The loss ruined what was a fantastic outing by starter Jaiden Ditimus. Ditimus went 6.1 innings and allowed four hits and three runs. Ditimus was replaced in the seventh inning by Jodie Aguirre, whose second pitch of the inning was hit out of the park by pinch hitter Corinne Badger, who hit her fifth home run of the season.
Brown finished the game with six hits by six different batters but left 11 batters on base, missing out on a few chances to increase its lead.
The Bears got the scoring going in the second inning, taking advantage of a Seawolves error. Laurel Moody reached on an error to lead off the inning and ended up on second base. A singly by Kat Clum moved Moody to second. After a pop out, Elayna Tsiouplis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two batters later, with two outs, Vanessa Alexander singled to left center to bring home Moody and Clum.
Stony Brook got one back in the bottom of the second but Brown responded in the fourth. Ditimus singled with one out and moved to third on a single by Leah Carey. With two outs, Alexis Guevara reached on an infield single as Carey beat the throw to second to score Ditimus.
Ditimus allowed just two singles over the next three innings and Brown looked like it had a chance to blow the game open in the seventh. Moody doubled to left center to start the inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. Clum was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on with no outs.
After Meghan Gormley lined out to second, Clum was caught stealing. Tsiouplis was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive, but Ditimus flew out to center to leave the runner stranded at third, setting up the comeback for Stony Brook.
GAME 2: FIU 5, BROWN 0
Brown fell behind early and could not get the offense going in a 5-0 loss to FIU in the nightcap on Saturday. The Bears managed just two hits on the night against the Panthers.
Florida International got to Brown starter Grace Ladd in the first inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Brown escaped further damage leaving the bases loaded after Erin Elgas came in the game in relief of Ladd.
The Bears were held without a baserunner until the sixth inning with Elayna Tsiouplis doubled over the head of FIU's right fielder. Tsiouplis moved to third on a flyout but was stranded after a groundout and strikeout.
Kat Clum singled up the middle with one out in the seventh and moved to second but the Bears couldn't get anything else to go.
Elgas pitched 1.1 innings in relief allowing just one hit. Alexis Guevara finished the game, pitching four innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four batters.
