Caron Leads Men's Hockey to 1-1 Tie at St. Lawrence; Pick Up Extra Point in Shootout
2/25/2022 10:26:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
CANTON, N.Y. – Mathieu Caron recorded 34 saves as the Brown Bears (6-17-4, 6-11-4 ECAC) and St. Lawrence Saints (8-16-7, 6-10-5 ECAC) skated to a 1-1 tie Friday night at Appleton Arena. Brown won the shootout to earn two ECAC league points in the game.
"I thought we started really strong and defended hard. They came at us in the second period and had a much stronger period than us. I knew there would be some pushback, we're both playing for home ice in the playoffs," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We'll take the extra point; but we have to find a way to get some points tomorrow, which won't be easy. We control our own destiny for home ice, which is good, but we need some points tomorrow."
Maloney gave the Bears the early lead 6:54 into the opening period following a strong forecheck from the line of Maloney, Jake Harris, and Matt Sutton. Harris picked up the puck following a Saints turnover and fired a shot on goal as he moved towards the slot. A crashing Maloney tipped Harris' initial shot with Emil Zetterquist (26 saves) making the stop, but the assistant captain followed the rebound for his ninth goal of the season.
Less than two minutes after Brown's goal, Caron (34 saves) made a fantastic save on a Kaden Pickering shot on a St. Lawrence 2-on-1 rush. Caron stood tall to make the save with his mask and quickly covered the puck to preserve the lead.
St. Lawrence pushed back in the second period, pressing for their first goal to tie the game. The Saints could not solve Caron, who finished the middle frame with 14 saves.
With Zetterquist pulled for the extra attacker, Tucker McIntosh found the equalizer with 2:27 remaining in regulation, wiring a point shot through traffic to finally beat Caron.
Neither team found the winner in overtime with the Saints outshooting the Bears 4-2.
Caron kept his strong play in the shootout, stopping the shootout's first attempt from Pickering. Jordan Tonelli followed Pickering and buried a five-hole shot on Zetterquist as he came down on the Swedish goalie with speed.
Caron then stopped breakaway efforts from Justin Paul and David Jankowski to lead the Bears to the 1-0 shootout win for the extra league point.
