HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless opening period, Brown upped the pressure in the second period, outshooting SLU 17-12 and taking the lead late in the frame. Mangiafico skated the puck into the offensive zone along the boards and fed a pass to Hurd in the low slot, who redirected it into the net to give the Bears the lead at the 16:08 mark.
- With the extra skater on the ice and their net empty, the Saints Abby Hustler scored on a slap shot from the blue line that clanked off the crossbar and in through a screen to knot the score at one with 33.3 seconds remaining.
- Brown controlled the tempo throughout much for the 3-on-3 overtime, but was unable to find the back of the net.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: MELANIE RUZZI
- "This was a really complete game for us. Systematically at times this season in tight games, we tried to do too much and strayed outside of our system, and today we put a major focus on playing our game, and doing it consistently and executing, and I thought we did that all game. We shut them down in the neutral zone, they couldn't get through us and had a hard time breaking out out against us. We blocked shots, picked up sticks in front, and we did all of the details of the game very well."
- "I knew it was going to be difficult to close it out if we only had a one goal lead. We didn't do as well on the power play today. We let them stick around and they're the No. 4 team in our league and have seniors and grad students all over the roster."
- "When we went to 3-on-3, we dominated them. They couldn't get much going, but they have a really good goaltender that leads the league in save percentage. I'm really proud of our team for that, but we just didn't finish."
