POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Brown Bears (4-8-2, 1-6-2 ECAC) erased a two-goal deficit to send the game to overtime and grabbed the extra league point with the shootout win over the Clarkson Golden Knights (7-8-1, 3-3-1 ECAC) Friday night at Cheel Arena.
The game ends in a 2-2 tie with Brown picking up two ECAC points with the shootout victory.
That was a big win, I consider it a win – the shootout is part of it," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We got an extra point and we found a way to battle back from a first period that might have been the worst period of hockey that our team has played in a long time. We found a way to get some juice, some energy, and have a great last two periods where I thought we outplayed them for long stretches. It's a tribute to the guys to be able to respond."
Mathieu Gosselin put Clarkson ahead 50 seconds into the opening period after wiring a wrist shot from the slot past Mathieu Caron (36 saves) following a Brown icing. Ayrton Martino and Alex Campbell assisted on the goal.
After James Crossman was assessed a major and misconduct at 11:17 of the first, Anthony Callin doubled Clarkson's lead at 12:08 of the frame, finishing a rebound with assists from Trey Taylor and Jordan Power.
Gavin Puskar pushed his point streak to four games with a power play goal 7:40 into the second period to cut into Clarkson's lead. Luke Krys blasted a shot from the point and Puskar tipped it past Ethan Haider (19 saves) to make it a one-goal game. Jackson Munro picked up the secondary assist on the junior's goal.
Brett Bliss nearly tied the game with 4:50 to play in the second, but his shot from the blue line rang iron.
Ryan Bottrill pushed his point streak to six games 5:37 into the third, striking for his sixth of the season to tie the game at 2-2. Bottrill collected a loose puck off the stick of Samuli Niinisaari in the slot and quickly fired a shot through Haider. Luke Albert picked up the secondary assist on the game-tying goal.
"Bottrill is the best rookie in our League and he's one of the better rookies we've had here in a long, long time," Whittet commented. "In my mind, I know he plays for me, he's the best rookie in our league; he's a first-line player for us and he's only getting better. He's got an incredible work-ethic and great hockey savvy to him."
Caron made consecutive saves to keep the game tied with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third.
The Bears killed a minor penalty halfway through the third and both teams had chances to win the game in the final stretch of regulation.
Brown held a 2-1 edge in shots in the overtime period as neither team found the golden goal, sending the Bears to their second shootout of the season.
Matt Sutton and Gosselin were the lone skaters to score in the first three rounds of the shootout. In the fourth round, Caron made the save on Martino and at the other end, Niinisaari deked Haider and scored to give the Bears the extra ECAC point.
