Iginla Scores Twice as Bears Fall to No. 10 Cornell
12/3/2022 5:08:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's hockey held the lead for most of the game, but it was No. 10 Cornell who scored a trio of third-period goals to come away with a 4-2 decision Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Freshman Jade Iginla picked up her sixth and seventh goals of the year for the Bears (4-7-1, 2-4-0 ECAC), while the Big Red (7-3-1, 5-2-1 ECAC) saw junior Izzy Daniel and sophomore Lily Delianedis pick up two scores. Junior goalie Kaley Doyle finished with 36 saves in the game.
"I was feeling good after the first two periods, we asked the team to create some separation after we scored the first goal and we did that," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "Jade chipped in two impressive goals and continues to make a huge impact offensively, as does her line. I'm happy with the performance but I know that we can be better."
Doyle stopped everything that came her way in the first, tallying 11 saves, including a trio in the waning minutes of the period. Brown had five shots on goal in the first 18 minutes and Iginla took advantage of the sixth opportunity. Down a player with just over a minute left, Iginla took it upon herself to swipe the puck from Cornell, breakaway, and fake out the keeper for the short-handed goal to make it 1-0. It was her first short-handed score of the year.
The Bears maintained their energy in the second and had a number of chances to up their advantage. Doyle kept Brown on top with 15 saves in the period. Iginla struck again with 1:06 on the clock for a power-play goal assisted by sophomores Cameron Sikich and Anna Shelden. Cornell would trim its deficit in half seconds later when Daniel found the back of the net from senior Gillis Frechette to make it 2-1 after two.
Cornell took over in the third. Delianedis knotted the score at two with 9:52 to go from freshman Alyssa Regalado. It took under two minutes for the Big Red to take the lead for good. It was Delianedis again, this time with assists from Regalado and Daniel. Cornell added to its lead at the 5:01 mark with a Daniel goal from Frechette to finish things off.
Brown continues its five-game homestand on Friday at 6 p.m. against Union.
