Bears Look Forward to Second Half of the Season After Falling to RPI
12/10/2022 5:23:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – RPI scored once in the second and again in the third period to capture its first ECAC win of the season and send the Brown University women's hockey team to winter break on the losing end, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Â
The Bears (5-8-1, 3-5-0 ECAC) were shutout for the second time this season, while the Engineers (5-14-1, 1-7-1 ECAC) win their first conference game in nine tries. Picking up goals for RPI were junior Ellie Kaiser and senior Maddy Peterson.
Â
RPI's senior goalie Amanda Ramapo finished with 24 saves for the shutout.
Â
"We've had a good first half of the year, but this is a disappointing ending," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "I didn't think we played a complete 60 minutes. Hats off to the RPI goaltender and their defense. We need to find different ways to create opportunities and win games. It's going to be a battle every night in the ECAC and I hope that tonight inspires us in the second half of the season."
Â
After a scoreless first period where the Bears outshot RPI, 10-1, the Engineers broke the stalemate with 4:16 remaining in the second. Freshman Sabrina Beaudoin and senior Marah Wagner sent a pass into a scrum in front of the net and Kaiser sent it home for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Brown picked up the pace after falling behind and had a number of opportunities. RPI then pushed the advantage to two goals with 7:49 left in the third when senior Sarah Bukvic and junior Nyah Phillip found Peterson for the second tally of the day.
Â
Kaiser sent home her second goal of the game on an empty-netter with 1:12 left to finish things off.
Â
Brown is off until Saturday, Dec. 31 when the Bears host UConn at 2 p.m.
