Brown Falls to UConn to Finish 2022
12/31/2022 3:49:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey suffered a 3-0 setback to UConn at Meehan Auditorium Saturday afternoon.
The Bears drop to 5-9-1 and finish nonconference play at 2-5-1, while the Huskies improve to 13-8-2 and 6-1-0 out of league. UConn's sophomore goalie Megan Warrener finished with 15 saves in the shutout.
"We had chances and UConn played very well defensively," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "The goaltender made some huge saves for them, but we didn't challenge her enough. We challenged the team to get inside the slot, work hard to cut seams, use our point, and didn't think we did enough of that. It's a bit symbolic that we're heading to 2023 and I look forward to getting back to playing our game."
UConn netted two goals in the first. The first took less than two minutes when sophomore Brianna Ware scored from freshman Megan Woodworth and junior Kathryn Stockdale. It took until 3:44 on the clock for the Huskies to strike again on senior Ainsley Svetek's goal from sophomore Ava Rinker and Carlie Magier. Brown had five shots on goal in the period.
Another quick score made it a 3-0 UConn lead in the second. This time it was Woodworth with helpers from Stockdale and senior Kaitlyn Yearwood. Brown had a flurry of opportunities with four quick shots on goal midway through the period, but were unable to capitalize.
UConn, who in came into the game third in the nation on the penalty kill, did it twice in third to boost its percentage. Senior Madie Stockfish and sophomore Anna Hurd each had shots that were saved down the stretch.
The Bears killed a pair of penalties as well in the contest.
Brown is on the road for the first time in over a month when the Bears take on St. Lawrence on Friday at 6 p.m.
