CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Gavin Puskar and Lynden Grandberg scored their first collegiate goals Friday night, but the Brown Bears (1-2-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) suffered a 5-2 road loss against the 15th-ranked Harvard Crimson (3-0-0, 3-0-0 ECAC) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
"Harvard has an elite skill level and the way to neutralize skill is to play disciplined, heavy and physical hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They have possibly the best power play in the country and we gave them PP's and they scored three man-up goals. If we want to continue to progress forward we need to have consistent efforts each time we wear the Brown jersey."
Harvard took an early lead with a power play goal 6:28 into the first period. Alex Laferriere redirected a centering pass from Matthew Coronato to beat goaltender Mathieu Caron (27 saves). Ryan Siedem picked up the secondary assist on the marker.
The Bears had a pair of scoring chances halfway through the frame, but Harvard goaltender Aku Koskenvuo (21 saves), making his first career start, turned aside shots from Wyatt Schlaht and Luke Krys.
Laferriere doubled Harvard's lead with his second power play goal of the night at 18:14 of the first with assists from Sean Farrell and Coronato.
Casey Severo got behind the Bruno defense and made it 3-0 Crimson 2:52 into the second period. Henry Thrun sprung Severo on the breakaway with a stretch pass through the neutral zone.
Puskar found the back of the net 4:22 into the middle frame to cut into the Crimson lead. The junior picked up the loose puck at the top of the offensive zone and found Ryan Bottrill across the blue line with a pass. Bottrill's shot was stopped by Koskenvuo with Puskar crashing the net for the rebound goal.
Brown and Harvard traded too many men minors halfway through the frame with neither team finding the back of the net.
Farrell scored a short-handed goal at 5:57 of the third period to add to Harvard's lead.
Grandberg tallied his first career goal with 12:59 remaining in the third period to make it 4-2 Crimson. Nathan Plessis and Wyatt Schlaht got below the goal line on the forecheck and after winning the battle, Plessis found Grandberg in the slot for the sophomore's first goal.
Bottrill continued his strong play with a move to the net at 15:20 of the frame, but Koskenvuo held for the save.
Harvard struck for their third power play goal of the night with one-second remaining on a Plessis cross-checking minor with 1:52 remaining in the third. Ryan Healey picked up his first career goal.
