HANOVER, N.H. – The Brown Bears (1-2-1, 1-2-1 ECAC) and Dartmouth Big Green (1-2-1, 1-1-1 ECAC) skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday night at Thompson Arena with the home team winning the shootout for the extra ECAC point.
Saturday marked the first overtime game and first tie of the season for both Brown and Dartmouth.
"Getting a tie and a point on the road is a positive but we have to start the game with the urgency we seem to end the game with," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "Our discipline continues to be an issue with another six minors – we need to understand playing hard and aggressive yet in control."
James Crossman put the Bears ahead at 3:21 of the first period with his first of the season on the power play. Dartmouth's Tanner Palocsik was whistled for cross-checking and Brown took the lead with Crossman's tally with assists from Samuli Niinisaari and Bradley Cocca.
The Big Green responded with a power play goal of their own at 16:29 of the first as Luke Haymes finished a feed from John Fusco to tie the game at 1-1. Cooper Flinton also assisted on Haymes' team-leading fourth of the season.
Mathieu Caron (34 saves) shined in the second period, stopping all 15 shots faced in the frame. Brown and Dartmouth went scoreless in the period and entered the third tied.
Brown had multiple scoring chances halfway through the second with Dartmouth goaltender Cooper Black (19 saves) stopping seven shots in a 2:11 span.
Bradley Cocca put the Bears ahead just 1:39 into the third period, collecting a Cole Quisenberry pass on a Brown rush and beating Black with a quick shot from the slot. Matt Sutton also assisted on the go-ahead goal.
Dartmouth tied the game as Braiden Dorfman struck on the power play with 6:23 remaining in regulation. Palocsik and Joey Musa assisted on the game-tying goal.
Brown had an early chance in overtime but a holding penalty gave Dartmouth their sixth power play chance of the night halfway through the extra period. Caron stopped five shots on the Dartmouth advantage and finished the extra period with seven saves to secure the 2-2 tie.
Musa was the lone scorer in the shootout to give the Big Green the extra point.
