Brown's defense shuts down Sacred Heart in 56-35 win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball used a historic defensive performance to beat Sacred Heart, 56-35 on Wednesday (Nov. 16). Brown improved to 2-2 on the season with the win and Sacred Heart dropped to 1-3.
The Bears surrendered just 35 points and held Sacred Heart to 19.7 percent shooting. Both of those numbers are the lowest that Brown has allowed to a Division I team since at least 2010-11. Brown dominated both the second and third quarters, holding Sacred Heart to six points in the second and four in the fourth.
Kyla Jones continued her hot start to the season with a team-high 19 points, adding six rebounds and three steals. Grace Arnolie had a season-high 13 points and was tied for the team lead with three assists. Isabella Mauricio was third on the squad with eight points, hitting two threes.
On the glass, Mya Murray was tops on the team with 12 rebounds. Murray also finished the night with three assists and two blocked shots.
Brown dominated inside, outscoring Sacred Heart 30-18 in the paint and forced 22 turnovers that the Bears turned in to 23 points.
The Bears trailed by two four minutes into the game but a three-point play by Murray gave Brown the lead they would never give up. Jones scored five of Brown's next seven points, hitting a three to put Brown up 16-8. Two Arnolie gave Brown its largest lead of the quarter at nine points. Brown scored 17 of its 21 points off Scared Heart turnovers in the first quarter.
Brown's lead hit double-digits for the first time in the game on a floater by Mackenzie Leahy and a three by Mauricio put Brown up 13 in a quarter that featured just 16 total points. Brown took a 31-20 lead into the half.
The offense slowed down for the Bears in the third quarter as Brown was outscored 11-7 in the frame. The Bears were just 3-for-14 from the floor and Sacred Heart made the game a seven-point game going into the final quarter.
The last quarter belonged to Brown as two buckets each from Arnolie and Page Greenburg pushed Brown's lead to 15. Sacred Heart scored its only field goal in the quarter to cut the lead to 13 but back-to-back threes by Greenburg and Arnolie put Brown up 18. Two free throws from Kyla Jones saw the lead hit 20.
The Bears won the final quarter 18-4, holding Sacred Heart to 1-for-16 shooting.
