Women’s Basketball Earns First Win 56-54 Over UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. - The Brown women's basketball team (1-2) earned its first win of the 2025-26 campaign 56-54 over the UMBC Retrievers (2-2) on Sunday evening.
Senior forward Alyssa Moreland posted double-doubles for the second time this season, netting 13 points while grabbing 14 rebounds. She first posted double-doubles in Brown's season opener at Belmont with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
First-year guard Charlotte Adams-Lopez had her second-straight game in double figures, scoring 14 points against the Retrievers, as well as Holy Cross earlier in the week.
UMBC got on the board first, earning a pair of free throws 14 seconds into regulation. A minute later, Brown went on a 7-0 run to open up its scoring.
The Bears closed out the first quarter the same way they started it, with a 9-0 run. After 10 minutes of play, Brown led UMBC 21-10.
The second quarter remained the highest-scoring for the Retrievers with 19 points. The Bears scored 16 points in the second quarter, with Adams-Lopez posting half of them. Moreland, first-year forward Isabella Wesley, and junior guard Olivia Young also contributed to Brown's scoring. The Bears led 37-29 at the break.
The third quarter was tight for both teams, with UMBC holding Brown to just six points. Both teams came out of the break trading off baskets. The Retrievers' Delaney Yarborough scored at 7:07, with both teams holding each other off from scoring until 4:22 when junior guard Monét Witherspoon made a layup to put the Bears ahead 41-34. Two minutes passed before the next basket was scored. UMBC netted 12 points in the third quarter, coming within two points of tying the score.
The score tied three times in the final quarter, with the Retrievers taking the lead twice. With around a minute left, Moreland made a free throw bringing the Bears to a 56-51 lead. 20 seconds later, UMBC's Dagny Slomack hit a three-pointer to bring the Retrievers within two points. The Bears stuck out the final seconds, earning their first win of the season.

The Bears will head back to Providence to host Boston University in its home opener on Wednesday (Nov. 19). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside of the Pizzitola Sports Center.
