SHELTON, Conn. – Brown women's crew opened the fall slate with four boats racing in the Head of the Housatonic at Indian Well State Park on Saturday.
The Bears had four Eight Boats compete in the season-opening race in a field of 28 collegiate boats from eight institutions.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are excited and looking forward to the challenge," said associate head coach Phoebe Murphy.
Brown's 'A' boat finished with a time of 15:24.5 to finish third among all boats. However, the Bears were assessed a 30-second penalty to fall back to fifth. The Brown coaching staff has contested the penalty.
The 'B' crew posted a time of 15:53.2 to finish third, trailing only the top-two crews from Yale. The crew edged out Yale 'D' by three-tenths of a second for the third-place finish.
Brown's third boat crossed the finish line in 16:06.7 for seventh, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of eighth-place Boston College 'B'.
Rounding out the Brown crews was the 'D' boat with a time of 16:56.2 to finish 12th overall, just ahead of Boston College 'C'.
The Bears return to action later this fall at the famed Head of the Charles Regatta. Brown is set to compete on Sunday (Oct. 23) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
