Water polo drops two games to start play at Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif – Brown men's water polo dropped its first two matches of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, falling to two ranked teams on Saturday.
The Bears (12-9) lost the first game of the day 16-14 to No. 16 California Baptist, before falling to No. 15 San Jose State, 21-14, to close out the night.
No. 16 California Baptist 16, Brown 14
Brown fell behind early and could not complete the comeback against the Lancers, falling by two to start the weekend.
Cole Atwell was the leading scorer for the Bears, tallying three goals. Filip Aleksic, Connor Enright and Gabe Chang each found the goal once.
Matt Simko and Chang each scored in the first as Brown was down one after the first quarter but CBU outscored Brown 6-2 in the second quarter to lead by five at halftime.
Eleven goals were scored in the third quarter as Brown tried to chip away at what was an 11-5 lead for CBU. Atwell and Aleksic scored twice and Daniel Hadar and Trey Rogers each scored once, pulling Brown within two but CBU scored three-straight goals, making the deficit 15-10.
Brown got goals from Enright and Nick Berry making it a three-goal game. A goal by CBU was followed by goals from Ben Kirshon and Chang with less than a minute left but that was the last Brown would score.
No. 15 San Jose State 21, Brown 14
Filip Aleksic and Cole Atwell each scored four goals but Brown could not stop San Jose State's offense in a seven-goal loss to the Spartans.
Brown trailed San Jose State by one late in the first quarter after goals from Atwell, Thomas Hoffmeister, Rogers and Kirshon but the Bears allowed two more goals to end the quarter, making the score 7-4.
Two-more goals to start the second made the deficit five before a goal from Aleksic and two from Chang made it 9-7. With less than two minutes left, the Spartans outscored Brown 3-0 to end the half.
A 3-0 run with a goal from Atwell and two from Aleksic pulled Brown to within two at 15-13 early in the fourth quarter. Atwell scored after two San Jose State goals to make it 17-14 with 5:34 left in the game but the Spartans used a 4-0 run to close out the game.
