WBB Forces 19 Turnovers in Round One Matchup vs Columbia

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown (5-12, 0-5 Ivy) trailed by as much as 12 and cut the deficit to one heading into the final quarter before Columbia (13-3, 4-0 Ivy) was able to escape the Pizzitola Sports Center with a 60-52 victory on Saturday.
Kyla Jones came off the bench with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting and added four rebounds and a blocked shot. Gianna Aiello swatted away three shots and the team forced 19 Lion turnovers. The defense held Columbia to 30.4 percent shooting from the field.
"I like the growth of our team and thought we gave ourselves a chance to win," said Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Head Coach Monique LeBlanc. "Our defense was great and helped set the tone. We're excited to get back to work and continue to get better."
FIRST QUARTER
Brown's defense came out stifling the Lions to a 4-of-18 performance in the opening period. The Bears took a 10-9 lead after 10 minutes of action with Aiello posting two of her three blocks in the opener.
SECOND QUARTER
Columbia settled down and went into the locker room with a 28-19 edge. Amanda Latkany recorded four points and four rebounds in the first half. The Bears registered four steals in the opening stanza.
THIRD QUARTER
Maddie Mullin connected on her first triple of the game with 7:28 remaining in the quarter and Mya Murray followed with a layup to cut the deficit to six.
Moments later, Jones drained back-to-back jumpers, the latter coming off the steal and assist by Charlotte Jewel.
Down eight with three minutes to go, Brown went on another run, beginning with Isabella Mauricio's three and consecutive buckets by Jones to make it a one-point ballgame entering the final quarter of regulation.
Overall, the Bears were plus-eight in the quarter and scored eight points off Columbia's five turnovers.
Brown did not commit a turnover in the third quarter. Jones went 4-of-5 for nine points, Latkany and Murray pulled down three rebounds apiece and Jewell added three assists and two steals.
Columbia did record six blocked shots in the third.
FOURTH QUARTER
Columbia was efficient in the paint to take the first of two regularly-scheduled 60-52.
INSIDE THE BOX
Jones posted 15 of her 19 in the second half. Mauricio finished with 10 points, the 12th double-digit scoring game of the season for the freshman and fourth consecutive.
Four Lions reached double figures and two posted double-doubles, led by Hannah Pratt's 17 points and 19 rebounds.
