ITHACA, N.Y. – Isabella Mauricio scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Bears but Brown fell to Cornell, 55-61, on a chilly Saturday afternoon (Jan. 29).
Brown (5-13, 0-6 Ivy) held a four lead with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter but Cornell (7-10, 2-4 Ivy) closed out the game on a 19-12 run to secure the win.
Mauricio led the Bears in scoring for the eighth time this season and hit the 20-point mark for the fourth time this year. Mauricio hit a career-best six threes. Kyla Jones finished the game with 13 points, going 6-for-11 from the field and Charlotte Jewell finished the game with nine points.
Brown outrebounded the Big Red, 40-39, with Mya Murray pulling down a team-high 10 boards. Gianna Aiello pulled down a career-high nine rebounds and scored a career-best four points. Both Jewell and Jones finished with six points.
Both teams got off to a cold start on offense as the game was tied 20-20 at the half. Mauricio led all scorers with 10 points but both teams shot under 32% from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Bears offense picked up in the second half as Brown shots 43% from the field in the third quarter and went 2-for-4 from three. With Cornell up 29-26 midway through the third, Mauricio went on a 5-0 run to put Brown on top. After a steal from Grace Kirk, Jewell hit a three of her own to give Brown its largest lead of the game at 34-29. The Bears would go cold over the last 2:30 of the quarter as Cornell used a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead into the final frame.
The offense got better in the fourth quarter as Brown shot 50% from the floor and went 4-for-9 from three (44%). Jones started the scoring with a layup and a three by Kirk put Brown up four. After a basket by Cornell, a floater from Mauricio kept the lead at four. Brown seemed to have a response for every basket from Cornell with Mauricio hitting a three with 6:08 left in the game.
It would be five minutes and thirty seconds before Brown scored again and Cornell used that time to climb back in the game. A 9-0 run by Cornell put the Big Red up by five until Mauricio ended the run with a three. Back-to-back layups by Cornell made the score 55-49 but Jones again cut the lead to four with a layup.
Cornell would get to the free throw line to put the game out of reach, going 11-for-16 from the stripe in the fourth quarter alone, and 18-for-32 from the free throw line for the game. Brown only managed eight free throw attempts, hitting four.
QUICK HITTERS
Brown will stay on the road for its next two games, playing at Harvard on Friday (Feb. 4) and at Dartmouth on Saturday (Feb. 5).
