Krys Caps Comeback for Men’s Hockey in Road Win at Rensselaer
1/22/2022 10:15:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y. – Trailing 2-0 through 20 minutes, the Brown Bears (4-12-0, 4-7-0 ECAC) tied the game in the second period with goals from Matt Sutton and Tristan Crozier, and completed the comeback victory with the game-winning goal from Luke Krys early in the third period for a 3-2 ECAC road win over the Rensselaer Engineers (10-14-3, 5-7-0 ECAC) Saturday night at Houston Field House.
"We played tenacious, hard hockey with a sense of urgency for 60 minutes," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "As I told the guys, the team that usually works the hardest will be rewarded, and we were rewarded tonight. It wasn't perfect, but we played very good hockey and found a way to be resilient and come back from being down 2-0 on the road. We'll take the three points and move into a big game on Friday at Princeton."
Shortly after Cole Quisenberry's short-handed bid was turned aside by Rensselaer goaltender Linden Marshall (13 saves), RPI senior Ture Linden tipped a blue line shot from Lauri Sertti to beat Brown netminder Mathieu Caron (24 saves) at 13:53 of the opening frame.
The Engineers doubled the lead two minutes later with their second power play goal of the night. TJ Walsh's initial shot on Caron which appeared to be stopped, but the loose puck trickled over the goal line before Brown defenseman Luke Albert could swat it away. Initially blown dead by the officials, a video review confirmed the puck crossed the goal line.
Caron stood tall in the first minute of the second period, turning aside back-to-back chances on a Zach Dubinsky short-handed breakaway. From there, Caron was only called upon to make two more saves through the end of the second period.
Sutton cut into Rensselaer's lead 3:17 into the second period with his first career goal. Following a Rensselaer icing, Jordan Tonelli drew the puck to Sutton, who quickly wired a shot through traffic over Marshall's right shoulder. Tonelli's assist marked the first collegiate point for the Armonk, New York native. Sutton picked up the secondary assist for his second point of the night.
Five minutes later, the captain tied the game with his second and Brown's second short-handed goal of the season. Rensselaer's Simon Kjellberg whiffed on a shot at his offensive blue line, where Crozier scooped the loose puck and rifled a top-shelf shot on the breakaway.
Krys gave the Bears their first lead of the game 6:44 into the final period, collecting a pass from Tonelli at his own blue line before skating down the right boards and beating Marshall's glove on the short side.
RPI ratcheted up the pressure in the final 10 minutes of the third, but Caron stopped all 11 shots faced until the final horn sounded with the Bears chipping in five blocked shots. Linden rang iron for the Engineers with 22 seconds remaining before Krys added a critical blocked shot and Caron made a final save as time expired.
