1/2/2022 7:07:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior forward Justin Jallen pushed his point streak to six games with a power play goal in the second period, but the Merrimack Warriors (7-9-1, 3-7-0 HEA) took a 7-1 win over the Brown Bears (3-11-0, 3-6-0 ECAC) Sunday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
"We have to do a better job as a staff, I have to do a better job and the team has to do a better job," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We have to make sure that we're stressing the right things, working on the right things, and helping these guys improve while putting them in situations where they can succeed. We have to be a lot better as we head into league play on Friday night."
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead 2:27 into the opening period as Jordan Seyfert tipped a blue-line shot from Mick Messner past Brown goaltender Luke Kania (13 saves)
Merrimack doubled the lead with 2:23 remaining in the opening frame as Max Newton won a net-front battle and buried the loose puck for his eighth goal of the season. Filip Forsmark and Declan Carlile assisted on the goal.
Brown scored on the power play off a slap shot from Samuli Niinisaari at 19:04 of the first period to cut into the Merrimack lead, but a Merrimack challenge for too many men on the ice was successful and the goal was waved off.
Filip Forsmark made it 3-0 Merrimack 1:05 into the second period, firing a feed from Carlile from the slot past Kania.
Jallen tallied his fifth goal of the season 3:03 into the second period on Brown's second power play chance of the game. Tristan Crozier moved the puck from the top of the zone to Michael Maloney just below the left circle, and Maloney wired a pass across the slot to Jallen for the back-door goal to beat Merrimack goaltender Hugo Ollas (22 saves).
Newton scored his second of the game at 14:23 of the second period to push Merrimack's lead to 4-1. Newton cut to the net and beat a Brown defenseman to finish a feed from Steven Jandric.
Forsmark scored his second of the game 4:01 into the third period with an assist from Jandric. Senior Gabriel Vinal (8 saves) replaced Kania in goal following the Forsmark tally.
The Warriors added a pair of goals before the final buzzer with Ryan Nolan and Matt Copponi finding the back of the net at 6:44 and 15:56 of the period, respectively.
Brown returns to ECAC conference play next weekend with a road game at second-ranked Quinnipiac (14-1-3, 5-0-1 ECAC) on Friday (Jan. 7) before heading to New Jersey to take on the Princeton Tigers (3-9-1, 2-4-0 ECAC) on Saturday (Jan. 8). Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
